What is fiber & my favorite high-fiber foods
You have definitely heard the phrase “an apple a day keeps the doctor away…” but have you ever thought the reason was simply for its high-fiber content?? It’s true! A typical apple is anywhere from 4-7 grams of fiber per fruit! Wow! That is roughly 1/5 of the daily fiber recommendation. That’s fantastic! We want to aim for 25 grams of fiber per day. This does not have to be in 1 or 2 meals either; it can be broken up throughout the day too so you don’t feel too full after a meal made of mostly fiber(s).
But why is it so important? Well, fiber has so many benefits! The first one is for digestion! Fiber adds bulk to the stool and this helps it move more efficiently through the digestive tract, which keeps things regular and prevents constipation (nobody wants that). Soluble fiber, found in foods like oats and apples, dissolves into a gel-like substance that slows digestion and helps regulate blood sugar and cholesterol levels. Insoluble fiber, on the other hand, doesn't dissolve and instead speeds up the passage of food through the gut, adding bulk that supports smoother elimination. This type of fiber is typically found in vegetables, whole wheat breads, nuts, seeds and legumes!
A quick way to remember it: insoluble fiber is generally the "rough" stuff like skins, seeds, stalks, and bran layers that don't break down much in water. It's what keeps things moving through the digestive tract rather than dissolving into a gel, like soluble fiber does. Together, both types of fiber feed beneficial gut bacteria, promoting a healthier microbiome and reducing the risk of digestive issues like bloating, diverticulitis, and even colon cancer.
Here are my personal “Top-10” favorite high-fiber foods I try to consume on a daily/weekly basis:
Raspberries: ~8g per cup, sweet-tart and great in yogurt or on their own
Avocado: ~10g per whole avocado, creamy and versatile
Chickpeas: ~12.5g per cup, roasted with spices they're basically a snack food
Lentils: ~15g per cup, hearty in soups and curries
Sweet potato: ~4g per medium potato (with skin), naturally sweet and satisfying
Pears: ~5.5g per medium pear, juicy and easy to eat on the go
Popcorn (air-popped): ~3.5g per 3 cups, satisfying crunch, whole grain
Black beans: ~15g per cup, great in tacos, chili, or bowls
Oats: ~4g per cup cooked, especially good loaded with fruit and cinnamon
Dark chocolate + almonds: almonds alone are ~3.5g per ounce, and pairing with a little dark chocolate makes fiber feel like a treat
